The AED34 billion metro line is being procured as a single design-and-build package, with prequalification now due on 9 October.
Approved on 22 April 2026, the Dubai Metro Gold Line will run 42 kilometres underground with 18 stations, at a cost of AED34 billion, according to the Dubai Media Office. It extends the metro network by 35 per cent, from 120 to 162 kilometres, and is set to open on 9 September 2032.
The line is tied to the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. It is expected to serve more than 55 development projects and to benefit more than 1.5 million people by 2040.
The Roads and Transport Authority’s request for qualifications covers a design-and-build service spanning civil works, electromechanical systems, rolling stock and rail systems, TradeArabia reported in June. MEED reported in September that the selected contractor will also assist with systems maintenance and operations for an initial three-year period, and that the prequalification deadline is now 9 October 2026.
Bundling civils, systems and rolling stock into one contract concentrates the integration risk with the contractor. The consortia that bid will be large, and the boundaries between their members, and between the line and the developments it serves, will carry much of the programme risk.
NDC does not replace developers, engineers, operators or specialist partners. It creates the structure that enables them to execute as one coordinated project team.
For developers near the line, it is an opportunity with a timetable attached. Station access, utility diversions and construction phasing will need to be coordinated with a programme that has a fixed end date and a procurement still under way.
Those that settle their interfaces with the line early, and in writing, will have fewer surprises later.
