On the Blue Line, the factory sets the pace
Dubai’s AED20.5 billion metro extension pairs a digitally guided tunnel boring machine with a precast ring factory producing 12 rings a day.

Passenger trains between the two cities began on 30 September. The work of joining a national railway to the city networks at either end is only starting.
Etihad Rail’s passenger service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi began on 30 September 2026, with ten trains a day, five in each direction, and a journey The National reports at about 64 minutes. Gulf News reports trains running at up to 200 kilometres an hour with room for up to 400 passengers, alongside six daily services between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, a route that has carried more than 150,000 passengers since it opened on 30 June.
The opening is a milestone for a network built to connect the emirates. It is also where a different kind of project begins: a national railway now has to work with the city systems at each end.
In Dubai, Al Yalayis station connects to the Metro Red Line through a 400-metre elevated pedestrian walkway, and is set to become an interchange when the Gold Line opens in 2032. Further stations follow on a published schedule: Zayed City and Liwa on 30 November, the Al Dhafra Region on 30 December, and Sharjah on 30 March 2027.
Each of those is a joint problem rather than a single asset: walkways and stations owned by different authorities, timetables that have to meet, and tickets sold through an app, a website and machines at stations. The engineering of any one element is rarely what decides how well the whole performs.
A project becomes truly executable only when engineering, technology, sustainability, governance, operations and strategic coordination are aligned from the beginning.
New stations change the value of the land around them. Developments planned near them will need their access, utilities and phasing coordinated with the railway’s own programme, and that coordination is easier to set up before design is fixed than after.
The integration work deserves the same structure as the construction: defined responsibilities at each interface, shared standards, and reporting that shows where the system stands, not just each part of it.
References to UAE priorities describe strategic alignment only and do not imply government appointment, approval or endorsement.
