On the Blue Line, the factory sets the pace

Dubai’s AED20.5 billion metro extension pairs a digitally guided tunnel boring machine with a precast ring factory producing 12 rings a day.

Tunnelling on the Dubai Metro Blue Line was launched on 3 May 2026, the Dubai Media Office announced. The 30-kilometre route, an investment of over AED20.5 billion, has a 15.5-kilometre underground section and 14 stations, and is scheduled to open on 9 September 2029. At launch the project stood at 20 per cent complete, with a target of 30 per cent by the end of 2026.

The Al Wugeisha tunnel boring machine is 163 metres long and weighs more than 2,000 tonnes, advancing 13 to 17 metres a day on average, supplied by a precast tunnel ring factory producing 12 rings a day. In July, Khaleej Times reported that the machine is equipped with the latest digital guidance and monitoring systems, and The National reported that the first phase of tunnelling had been completed in two months.

Off-site production, on-site rhythm

A tunnel advances only as fast as its supply of rings and the logistics behind them allow. Pairing a dedicated precast factory with a monitored machine turns tunnelling into a production line, where daily output can be planned, measured and compared against the programme.

What digital monitoring adds

Monitoring data is most valuable when it is used beyond the tunnel itself: to adjust logistics, to evidence progress to the client, and to build an asset record that the operator can rely on after handover.

Projects that plan their data from the start, deciding what is captured, who owns it and how it passes to operations, get more from their digital tools than those that add them later.
